Our Alcohol & Drug Addiction Rehab Services in Chicago

At our Chicago Independence center, Our services focus on a comprehensive approach to care. We aim to address the social, emotional and physical aspects of addiction to improve your chance of a successful recovery. Our patients receive services like:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy: Through cognitive behavioral therapy, patients will work on changing their thinking, beliefs and values to overcome addiction and reduce the chances of relapse. 
  • Dialectical behavior therapy: The first step of dialectical behavior therapy is usually identifying and modifying behaviors, thoughts and emotions contributing to drug or alcohol misuse. Overall, the main goal throughout the seven components is emotional regulation. 
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a type of psychotherapy that encourages patients to be mindful, accept realities, choose a direction in life and then take action.
  • Motivational interviewing: All patients can benefit from motivational interviewing (MI). During these therapy sessions, clients will be asked to focus on the positives of sobriety and their future. 
  • Mindfulness-Based Sobriety: Mindfulness-based sobriety focuses on the present, encouraging patients to focus and progress toward sobriety through addiction treatment programs.
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment: For patients who need additional help managing withdrawal symptoms, we offer Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to help with sobriety and prevent relapse. 
  • Dual diagnosis treatment: Designed for patients dealing with substance misuse and a mental condition, our dual diagnosis treatment combines various therapies to treat both disorders at the same time.
  • 12-Step Facilitation: The evidence-based 12-Step Facilitation (TSF) model helps reduce substance use by involving patients in a 12-step fellowship.
  • Individual, group and family counseling: Our Chicago Independence Boulevard treatment center lets patients choose from individual, group or family counseling. No matter if you desire support from peers or want to encourage your family to work toward a common goal, our staff will create a treatment plan meeting your needs.
  • Trauma therapy: As part of our trauma therapy, we get our patients involved in a Seeking Safety program. For those suffering from an addiction, we can incorporate Dual Diagnosis Enhanced Treatment. 

During your first appointment, we will conduct an intake to determine your needs. We will then use this discussion to create a personalized treatment plan that includes the right services for your symptoms.

Dr. Ciuinal Lewis has 30 years of professional experience where she continues to lead at organizations focused on addictions treatment, behavioral health and recover support services for adults. Driven by her desire to have all individuals treated with respect, integrity, care and compassion, she takes pride in her years of service and the opportunities she has had to serve those most at risk.

After receiving her master’s degree from Western Illinois University, Dr. Lewis returned home to the near west suburbs of Chicago where she began working in three roles to “change the world, one kid at a time”.  As a Prevention Specialist with a small nonprofit, she dedicated her days to educating the community about the dangers of smoking and illicit drug use. Also, serving as a volunteer at the Bellwood Youth Center and finally tutoring kids in the evenings.

Out of the gate, Dr. Lewis had a passion to reach youth and those struggling with addictions.  Subsequently, she became a Program Coordinator at the American Red Cross, where she was able to travel the city and state training professionals on how to impart culturally sensitive and bias free HIV & AIDS prevention education messages. Since that time, Dr. Lewis has held progressively responsible roles as Program Administrator, Regional Director, Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, at various nonprofit organizations.

Dr. Lewis holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Western Illinois University in Community Health Education and she earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Community Psychology from National Louis University, Chicago, Ill., in 2011. She was the two-time recipient of the University’s College of Arts and Sciences Doctoral Academic Scholarship.

Dr. Lewis is currently a member of the Illinois Public Health Association and serves on the National Board of Directors for We Raise Foundation and is a member of the Trustee Board for the Bensenville Community Public Library.

Keith Sarpolis

Keith Sarpolis, MD

Medical Director

Dr. Keith Sarpolis has over 37 years of diverse experience focused on substance use disorder and internal medicine. He approaches healthcare through a holistic perspective, believing that treatment of both the physical and psychosocial aspects of a patient’s health is critical.

Dr. Sarpolis earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School.

Craig Lamb, CRADC, LCPC

Clinical Director

Craig Lamb, CRADC, LCPC, Clinical Director started working in the addictions field in 1998 as a behavioral tech while obtaining his Bachelor’s degree in psychology from University of Florida. Craig later received his Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Springfield College. He has spent over twenty years working in varying levels of care helping adult clients with co-occurring disorders. Craig moved to Chicago and joined the Gateway team in 2015.

Types of Substance Use Disorders Treated at Our Chicago Drug Rehabilitation Center

Various substances can cause addiction, and each type of addiction requires a different approach. At our drug treatment program in Chicago, we help patients with addictions to substances such as:

  • Alcohol: We personalize our alcohol treatments to ensure each patient receives the evidence-based services and support they need. With residential or outpatient and aftercare options available, you’ll receive holistic-based healing on your schedule. 
  • Opioids: Patients suffering from either prescription opiate or illicit opioid use disorder will find guidance and healing at our Chicago rehab center. By first addressing underlying conditions, patients can then start comprehensive behavioral therapy sessions. 
  • Cocaine: Depending on the patient’s needs, our cocaine treatment can include behavioral therapy, social services and medicine for withdrawal symptoms. Our medical team will also address any underlying conditions and help with peer support.
  • Stimulants: Clients with a stimulant addiction will find hope and healing through a personalized program. From withdrawal management to counseling and therapy, we’ll be with you every step of the way. 
  • Benzodiazepines: As part of our benzodiazepines, or benzos, treatment, patients undergo an assessment and supervised withdrawal. We also offer group and individual counseling and relapse prevention services to ensure long-term success. 
  • Club drugs and hallucinogens: Our Independence Boulevard drug rehab center treats patients dealing with a club drug addiction. Whether it’s PCP, LSD or other substances, we’ll create individualized plans based on your needs.

Program Models at Our Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment Center in Chicago

As one of our patients, you can participate in a few different program models:

  • Outpatient: During outpatient treatment, you visit our clinic near Independence for services on a regular basis. You may need an outpatient program if you want to keep attending work or school.
  • Residential: An inpatient program allows you to get treatment without interruptions in a supportive environment. If you have severe symptoms, a residential model gives you the time and space to fully focus on recovery.
  • Recovery home: After you complete residential treatment, you can join our recovery home program. Our recovery homes offer an environment where you can continue recovery with our support.

Some patients transition between outpatient and inpatient as they go through treatment. We will work with you to find the right model for your needs and adapt our services as you recover.

Chicago has several options for individuals interested in joining a recovery meeting, including Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and many more. By joining with others in the city or surrounding areas, patients can find the support and encouragement they need to continue treatment and reach long-term recovery results.
