Gateway Foundation and other substance use treatment providers must adequately screen and address trauma, as 75% of people seeking substance use treatment have a history of trauma. This training aims to help practitioners develop an agency-wide view of trauma-informed care in behavioral health settings. We will provide a comprehensive view of trauma-informed care, explaining various aspects for those new to the topic and thought-provoking questions for those already utilizing it in their practice.
Further discussions will include:
- What is trauma and trauma-informed care – a review of the history as well as the benefits for both staff and patients.
- A review of common mistakes practitioners make when treating a population impacted by trauma and identify best-practices
- The core principles of trauma-informed care will include promoting safety, transparency, and acknowledgment of historical and cultural issues. We will discuss how the field of substance use has changed in its approach to be more trauma-informed.
- An in-depth discussion about how to implement trauma-informed care at various levels of care. There will be a focus on applicable strategies to improve the physical environment, patient engagement, and assessment/intervention services.
