Since Codependent No More became a self-help book sensation nearly 40 years ago, we’ve seen a torrent of book titles, articles, workshops, and even whole therapy centers centered around codependence work as a therapy concept. Codependency is what we know. But codependency has never been formalized as a diagnosis in the DMS or the ICD. Not ever. In fact there has never been a formal, criteria-based addiction or mental health diagnosis for the “issue” that we call codependency. So, what does this mean to our work today? Which one of the 340+ books on this topic holds the ‘right’ method? Perhaps codependency requires a review for 2020. This thought-provoking talk by treatment specialist, author, and speaker Dr. Robert Weiss LCSW asks attendees to question old assumptions and consider new ideas, ensuring the work we provide remains strength-based, useful and deeply compassionate.

Trauma, Attachment, Dissociation & EMDR

Time: 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm CST
CEU: 1.5 credits
In this webinar, Dr. Ross will discuss the relationships between attachment conflicts, dissociation and EMDR Therapy. A core principle from his Trauma Model Therapy (TMT) is the problem of attachment to the perpetrator – this will be explained and then linked to dissociation and EMDR Therapy. Four meanings of the word ‘dissociation’ will be reviewed to clarify the discussion. Within TMT a basic function of dissociation is to protect a child’s attachment systems and solve the problem of attachment to the perpetrator. The child also develops a conflicted, ambivalent and dissociated relationship with him or herself. These dissociated elements of self can be targets within EMDR Therapy, which is fundamentally based on a trauma-dissociation model, as Dr. Ross will propose. The goal of EMDR Therapy is to integrate these dissociated elements with the Adaptive Information Processing Model.

In many ways, the current treatment model is not working. Suicide rates are up, overdoses are running rampant in our culture, and relapse continues to be accepted as a “part of recovery.” I believe we can do better. At this time in our evolution, we may need to ask ourselves what WE can do differently. It is time to shift the conversation from addiction treatment to addiction healing.

In the current treatment paradigm, we as clinicians often treat symptoms without looking deeper into the root causes of addiction. We also often use language that can be disempowering and create an environment in which our patients remain stuck in a sense of hopelessness. Many of us have been trained to diagnose and treat, which is useful, at some level. We also sometimes look at our patients through the lens of “brokenness” rather than holding a space for them to access their inner-wisdom and heal from multiple layers of unresolved trauma, spiritual disconnection, and toxic shame.

The Fusion of Substance Use & Sex Addiction

Human sexuality, intimacy, and romance are among the most profoundly meaningful and driving forces in all our lives. Whether considering communal, family, and friendship focused intimacies or romantic sexual encounters, nothing is more predictive about the overall success of our physical and emotional lives than the success of our relationships. And yet, when patients come into addiction and mental health treatment, how often do our clinical assessments, questions, and even the framing of clinical disorders avoid asking about the sex itself? Why is it that mental health and addiction professionals often have (for example) no problem openly discussing a patient’s childhood sexual trauma, but seem less comfortable exploring similar issues related to their adult sexuality and intimate relationships? This goal of this talk is to examine how we can improve overall clinical care and clinical outcomes by clearly and openly assessing for sexual issues at the start of any treatment, especially if we wish to reduce recidivism among drug addicts and other emotionally challenged populations. If we are more purposeful and adept and assessing for sexual issues in treatment, doesn’t that imply we will be better able to capture potential situations where our patients will relapse (in various forms) related to sex? Let’s talk about it.
