What to Expect in Residential Treatment at Gateway Foundation
Beginning residential treatment can be overwhelming, but knowing what to expect can help you feel more prepared and confident to begin your treatment program.
Each stage of our residential treatment is designed to provide you with a structured, safe environment to focus on healing. No matter where you’re at in your recovery, we’re here to provide support at every step of the way.
Week 1: Stabilization and Initial Planning
- Safe detox with medical supervision and medication as needed.
- Psychiatric evaluation to determine mental health and medication needs.
- Development of an initial treatment plan and discharge planning.
- Education on substance use disorder and coping skills begins.
- Coordination with external supports (family, probation, therapists, etc.).
Week 2: Medication Monitoring and Education
- Ongoing adjustment of medication plans (MAR and psychotropic meds).
- Counseling focuses on disease education, triggers, cravings, and understanding the relationship between mental health issues, trauma issues and substance use disorder.
- Family involvement begins with education sessions and support planning
Weeks 3-4: Skill Development and Recovery Planning
- Therapy sessions (individual, group, and family) focus on building recovery skills.
- Practice evidence-based strategies for maintaining recovery.
- Exploration of high-risk triggers and community support options.
- Continued medication adjustment and effectiveness monitoring.
Week 5: Discharge and Transition
- Finalize discharge plans, including follow-up appointments and medication prescriptions.
- The family is part of discharge planning and is prepared to support the client in their recovery goals and plans.
- Practice high-risk scenarios and recovery strategies with support staff.
- Establish step-down outpatient services to maintain continuity of care.
