Summertime Support: Maintaining Your Recovery in the Warmer Months
As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, the start of summer can be an exciting time. However, this time can also lead to more frequent social events, busier schedules, and increased exposure to triggers that may challenge you. It’s important to prioritize your recovery while still enjoying the summertime festivities.
Stick to Your Routine
Summer usually comes with more frequent plans, vacations, and events, and this busy time might throw you off your schedule. Having a consistent routine will help you build healthy habits and reduce stress and uncertainty. Maintaining regular sleep, meals, exercise, and other normal parts of your schedule will ultimately strengthen your focus on recovery.
Plan Recovery-Friendly Activities
Warmer weather means endless options for fun activities! Summer is a great time to plan a recovery-friendly gathering with friends or family—or enjoy these by yourself! Some ideas include:
-Hiking
-Kayaking
-Going to an outdoor movie showing
-Hosting a barbecue
-Going to the zoo
-Swimming
-Attending a baseball game
-Having a picnic
-Going fishing
-Attending an outdoor yoga or workout class
-Playing basketball, pickleball, or tennis with friends
-Visiting a farmer’s market
Be Prepared
If you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, it’s important to check in with yourself before going to events or gatherings. Make sure you have an exit plan if you feel you need to leave, and think of someone you can call if you need support.
Stay Connected with Your Recovery Community
Your schedule may become more booked during summer months, but it’s important to stay in touch with your support systems. Whether it’s a therapist, support group, or alumni network, these resources are important to prioritize when maintaining your recovery. If you’re busy or traveling, seek out virtual options to stay connected.
Celebrate Yourself
Take the time to acknowledge how far you’ve come in your journey. Celebrate important milestones and do something to reward yourself and your progress.
