Trauma Therapy Program

Gateway Foundation’s trauma therapy acknowledges the relationship between trauma and substance use and provides a safe space where an individual can heal, build healthy coping skills, and receive integrated treatment.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program

DBT teaches individuals how to manage emotions that alter behavior, shifting thoughts to a positive mind space to inspire positive actions. DBT’s main goal is to encourage a person to change what they can control and not allow outside factors to be a barrier to recovery.

Learn More

Mindfulness-Based Sobriety

Mindfulness uses acceptance and other coping skills to help an individual stay present, manage stress, identify triggers, and build healthier responses to support recovery and lower the risk of returning to use.

Learn More

12-Step Facilitation

Gateway facilitates 12-step curriculum after treatment by encouraging patients to understand the benefits of 12-step meetings and providing a counselor who can support a patient’s connection to outside community groups while offering a space for concerns or questions about these programs.

Return to Use (Relapse) Prevention

While all of our treatment involves effective skill building to prevent returning to use or relapse, there are certain practices that we highlight which focus on identifying potential high risk triggers, teaching new coping skills, managing cravings, building a solid support system and finding alternatives to substance use through activities like yoga, meditation, and hikingWe also identify other appropriate resources for each individual including initiating medication assisted recovery and stepdown therapy services.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Program

CBT focuses on identifying thought patterns and reframing negative thoughts in a positive light by focusing on the current moment rather than the past or future. CBT is often used alongside other types of therapy to help patients develop skills to manage thoughts and triggers that may interfere with their recovery.

Learn More

Medication-Assisted Recovery

Medication assisted recovery supports an individual through withdrawal by treating related conditions such as reducing cravings and cooccurring mental health disorders like depression and anxiety, which may increase a patient’s risk of returning to use. These medication support plans are managed by highly skilled and experienced medical staff specializing in both substance use and mental health disorders. Medication management and support increases rates of success, enhances safety, decreases withdrawal symptoms, and increases overall stability as part of a comprehensive recovery plan.

Motivational Interviewing

Our team members are trained in Motivational Interviewingwhich is an intervention that helps patients find positive reasons to seek recovery. These reasons will be different for each person, and MI embraces this by asking specific questions about a patient’s goals, career, family, and health to help that patient be as involved as possible in their own recovery journey. This practice is intended to help patients overcome anxiety that may be contributing to resistance to follow through on their recovery goals.

Learn More

Coping Skills Therapy

Coping skills therapy helps an individual build healthy habits, manage stress, avoid high-risk situations, practice relaxation techniques, and strengthen accountability to reduce risk of returning to use and longterm recovery.

Learn More

Group and Individual Therapy

Gateway provides psychoeducation at every location to help all patients understand themselves, their disorders, and skills to build a healthier life. Group settings allow these conversations to be explored with peers who can support one another in addressing their struggles with both substance use and mental health disorders. This therapeutic environment helps patients utilize others for problem solving and skill building while creating a collaborative environment with both other patients and counselors to aid in recovery planning.

Counselors are available for one-on-one and family sessions to help each patient have a private space to share and address their recovery goals.  Family sessions help those who have a caring relationship with the patient become experts in their loved one’s recovery plans and treatment goals.

Our treatment sessions offer various benefits for physical, mental, emotional and social well-being. From customized recovery approaches to community-building opportunities, there are many reasons to consider Gateway Foundation when you need clinical services for addiction in Illinois. Below are some advantages you or a loved one may find from attending our sessions.

Benefits of Our Clinical Addiction Services in Chicago, Illinois

Improved Health and Well-Being

Addiction recovery improves your body and mind’s overall health. Drug and alcohol misuse is extremely taxing — physically, mentally and emotionally. It can weaken the body, impair your judgment, interfere with sleep and cause a variety of long-term health problems.

Gateway’s clinical treatment programs offer many health-related benefits to reduce drug and alcohol cravings, including:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Improved thinking and behaviors
  • Regained strength and confidence
  • Nutrition and exercise guidance

These approaches help recover valuable nutrients in the body to boost your overall mood and health. When you no longer have a desire for these substances, you’ll notice significant changes in the way you look, feel and act.

Connection Opportunities

A solid support network makes a world of difference in your recovery and healing journey. Gateway’s therapy programs offer a close-knit community of counselors, staff, and people with similar struggles and experiences. Our sessions aim to instill a sense of community, connection and support. This is vital for someone who is overcoming addiction and needs a helping hand along the way.

No one should have to battle addiction alone. Gateway Foundation can help you or your loved one build valuable, long-term bonds and relationships with others.

Structure and Organization

Our clinical therapy programs provide clear-cut structures and curriculums for addiction recovery. Creating a solid plan and routine is an important first step toward sobriety, and we help patients do just that. We encourage daily habit-building, productive activities and outlets, and regular meetings and sessions.

Over time, these strategies help patients break self-destructive patterns and habits. They can continue applying these healthy practices to their everyday life post-treatment — that way, they can maintain sobriety and continue to live a more enriching life. For these reasons, structure and organization are valuable components in addiction recovery.

Accountability

Having a positive support system is crucial for healing. Fighting addiction on your own can be difficult, counterproductive and risky. It’s important to surround yourself with an uplifting community that understands what you’re going through — and can hold you accountable when needed.

When you attend therapy sessions at Gateway, you’ll have regular progress checkups with compassionate individuals. Rather than judge you, our staff members and fellow group participants are there to provide help and support. You’ll have people to rely on through your good and bad days, setbacks and milestones.

Accountability is beneficial in addiction recovery. Our Gateway community can offer the support and accountability you need to keep going and achieve your goals.

Personalized Approaches

At Gateway Foundation, we understand and acknowledge that every patient’s situation is different. They all have unique backstories, circumstances and needs requiring a specialized therapy approach. That’s why we customize our recovery programs and treatment routes to accommodate each individual.

You can choose the appropriate therapy programs for a loved one or yourself, or our skilled team can help you select the right path and tailor it to these needs. Whether motivational interviewing, trauma therapy, recreational activities or another one of our clinical programs, we can help you find the right customized approach.

A little over 7 years ago I decided to seek treatment for alcohol and drug addiction and chose this facility as a place to try and arrest my disease and I have been clean and sober ever since. After 30 days inpatient treatment and 9 months outpatient I was able to achieve that goal. I recommend this facility to anyone who truly wants freedom from active addiction.

Dwayne D

This place honestly saved my life. I was so bad my counselor said in the 2 years she was working there my case was the most unique she’s ever had, and now I’m almost 15 months clean!

    FAQs About Clinical Addiction Services

You’ve learned about our therapy programs and the benefits of pursuing treatment with Gateway, but you might have some other questions about our services or addiction in general. Below are the answers to some FAQs that may help you.

    1. How Do Clinical and Nonclinical Treatment Differ?

Generally, clinical treatments involve direct patient care and diagnosis, while nonclinical services do not involve patient treatment. Clinical addiction treatment involves licensed clinical and medical professionals that can help patients detox from substances, for instance. Detoxing on your own without medical supervision can be dangerous, as withdrawal effects like dehydration and seizures can occur.

Clinical addiction treatment also uses mental and psychological approaches — like cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy and mindfulness-based sobriety — led by experienced counselors.

Conversely, nonclinical recovery involves applying what you’ve learned in treatment to real-life scenarios. This could be trying new coping mechanisms and recreational activities like relaxation techniques, painting or going to the gym. Consistency, transparency, communication and support from coaches and peers alike can make this process easier.

    2. Will Health Insurance Cover Addiction Therapy?

Because addiction is a substance use disorder, United States health insurance policies are required to cover some type of addiction treatment. Just keep in mind there are many types of health insurance providers, and some may have certain restrictions on coverage. That’s why it’s important to speak with your provider and read their policy in full before pursuing therapy.

Overall, however, you can safely assume you’ll have some degree of addiction treatment coverage if you have any form of health insurance. Gateway accepts all major insurance plans.

patients can use their insurance for various types of rehabilitation programs and therapies at Gateway. During your admissions process, we’ll gather your insurance information and explain what your policy covers, ensuring you get what coverage and services are available to you.

    3. What Are the Signs of Someone Needing Addiction Treatment?

Knowing and recognizing the symptoms of substance use disorder can help you determine whether you or a loved one should pursue treatment. Here are some common signs of alcohol or drug addiction to look out for:

    • Bloodshot eyes or constricted pupils (miosis)
    • Sudden weight loss or gain
    • Irregular sleep patterns, such as insomnia (insufficient sleep) or hypersomnia (excessive sleep)
    • Poor personal hygiene
    • Complexion changes, such as jaundice, acne, pale skin, bruising, scarring, scabs or track marks
    • Impaired coordination, movement and speech patterns
    • Unusual smells on the body, breath or clothing

You should also watch for behavioral changes, such as:

    • Forgoing responsibilities like work, school or cleaning the house
    • Financial distress
    • Secretive behavior or withdrawal from family and friends
    • Poor work performance or grades in school
    • Binge eating or loss of appetite
    • Loss of interest in social activities or hobbies
    • Irritability and mood swings
    • Depression, anxiety or low self-esteem

The warning signs of substance misuse can also vary by gender. For instance, men might experience fertility issues, testicle shrinkage or using drugs to enhance their mood. Meanwhile, women may experience drastic weight loss, male-pattern baldness or uncharacteristic body hair growth. They’re also more likely to have panic attacks with certain substances.

If you notice any of these symptoms in yourself or a loved one, it may be time to seek treatment. Feel free to browse our FAQ page if you have more questions about addiction warning signs or the services we offer.
