We recognize that mental health and substance use are intricately linked, often forming a vicious cycle. In 2023, 44% of adults with an SUD also had a mental health disorder of some kind. Research indicates that while having a substance use disorder (SUD) can increase the likelihood of developing mental health disorders, conditions like ADHD, anxiety, and mood disorders can also elevate the risk of developing an SUD.

The Link Between Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders

Research has found that those with substance use disorders are oftentimes more likely to struggle with a mental health disorder, and vice versa.

Anxiety Disorders: Those with some sort of anxiety disorder are 2-3 times more likely to struggle with SUDs.

ADHD: Research has shown that individuals with ADHD can have up to twice as high of a risk of developing an SUD.

PTSD: Individuals with PTSD may be 2-4 times more likely to also have an SUD.

Why is there a link between SUD and mental health disorders?

There are several reasons why SUD and mental health disorders often go hand in hand, a few being:

  • Environmental factors: Individuals face higher rates of SUDs and mental health disorders when there are common risk factors are present. Genetics, living environment, and trauma can all play a role in developing SUDs and mental health disorders.
  • Self-medication: Those with mental health disorders may use substances to alleviate the symptoms of their disorder, which can lead to a substance use disorder.
  • Brain changes: Substance use can alter the way the brain works. Some people may find that after prolonged substance use, their mental health has worsened.

Why it Matters

It’s important to treat co-occurring disorders together, because each condition can worsen the other, making recovery more difficult if only one is addressed. An integrated approach is proven to better sustain long-term recovery.
