Levels of Care

Finding the right treatment for substance use or co-occurring mental health disorders can feel overwhelming—but understanding the different levels of care is a great place to start. At Gateway Foundation, we offer a full continuum of care designed to meet people wherever they are in their recovery journey.

Whether someone needs medically monitored detox, structured residential care, or flexible outpatient options, every level of care plays an important role in helping individuals heal and build a life in recovery.

Here’s a breakdown of the main levels of care and how they work:

Residential Withdrawal Management (Detox)

Also known as detox, this is often the first step in treatment for individuals who are physically dependent on alcohol or other substances. Detox is provided in a medically supervised environment where patients can safely manage withdrawal symptoms under the care of licensed professionals.

At Gateway Foundation, detox services include:

  • 24/7 medical monitoring
  • Medication-assisted support when appropriate
  • Option to transition to a residential program after completion

Residential Treatment

Residential or inpatient treatment offers 24/7 care in a live-in treatment center. It’s a structured, supportive environment, ideal for individuals who need distance from daily triggers, or who benefit from an immersive setting.

Key features of residential care include:

  • Individual and group therapy
  • Recovery education
  • Peer support and community-building
  • Wellness and life skills programming

By focusing completely on recovery, residential treatment gives individuals the tools they need to begin rebuilding their lives.

Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient care allows individuals to receive expert treatment while continuing with work, school, or family responsibilities. It’s flexible and effective—and comes in multiple levels to match varying needs:

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

The highest level of outpatient care, PHP programs meet several hours per day, up to seven days a week. Individual, group, family therapy, and on-site medical care is offered. This is ideal for those needing intensive medical or therapeutic support or transitioning from inpatient care.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

A step down from PHP programs, IOP offers more frequent treatment with structured therapy sessions.

Standard Outpatient (OP)

Standard Outpatient is a lower-intensity treatment model, with sessions a few times per week with a therapist/counselor.

Virtual Outpatient Treatment

For those facing barriers to in-person care, like transportation, geography, or scheduling, virtual outpatient programs offer accessible, confidential care from home. Patients engage in therapy and support groups via secure video conferencing platforms.

Recovery Homes

Recovery homes (also known as sober living homes) provide safe, supportive housing for individuals transitioning out of higher levels of care. These residences offer a substance-free environment where people can strengthen their recovery foundation while working, attending outpatient treatment, or continuing education.

Recovery homes promote:

  • Peer accountability
  • Routine and stability
  • Connection to community resources
  • Independence with support

They serve as a bridge between treatment and long-term recovery.

Finding the Right Fit

No two recovery journeys are the same, which is why it’s important to receive an individualized assessment to determine the appropriate level of care. At Gateway Foundation, our expert team works closely with each person to create a personalized treatment plan that meets their needs, goals, and circumstances.

Whether someone is just starting treatment or stepping down from a more intensive level of care, there’s a place for everyone in recovery—and support every step of the way.
