CHICAGO, IL – Gateway Foundation, a national nonprofit provider of substance use and mental health disorder treatment and recovery services, is proud to announce the appointment of April Schweitzer as General Counsel. With more than a decade of healthcare regulatory and transactional legal experience, Schweitzer brings a deep understanding of the complexities of healthcare law and a longstanding passion for health advocacy.

“I am thrilled to join Gateway Foundation and look forward to the opportunity to utilize my skill set to help ensure patients receive the support they need to heal, thrive, and rebuild their lives at a time when there is so much need,” Schweitzer said.

Before joining Gateway Foundation, Schweitzer built a successful career in private practice, advising a wide range of healthcare providers—including hospitals, health systems, physician groups, and federally qualified health centers—on critical legal matters such as corporate governance, licensure, tax exemption, and organizational transactions.

“April’s unique blend of legal acumen, healthcare industry insight, and commitment to public health makes her an ideal fit for Gateway Foundation,” said Jeremy Klemanski, President and CEO of Gateway Foundation. “We’re confident that her leadership will strengthen our legal and compliance operations as we continue expanding access to high-quality treatment for substance use and mental health disorders.”

Schweitzer’s dedication to healthcare access and advocacy began before law school, during her time in Washington, D.C., where she worked for a nonprofit organization focused on public health initiatives. She serves on the board of directors of a federally qualified health center and is an active member of the Illinois Association of Healthcare Attorneys.

Schweitzer holds a B.A. from Marquette University and a J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
