Gateway Foundation is aware of reports of fraudulent phone calls made by unauthorized individuals falsely claiming to represent our organization.
Our investigation determined that an unauthorized third party spoofed a Gateway Foundation phone number and used it to place fraudulent calls requesting payment for services. A spoofed call makes it appear that a call is coming from a legitimate Gateway Foundation phone number when it actually originates from an external source.
Reports indicate that some individuals, including people who have never been affiliated with Gateway Foundation, received these calls.
Importantly, no patient data, protected health information (PHI), or other sensitive information maintained by Gateway Foundation has been impacted by this incident.
Actions We Have Taken
Gateway Foundation has:
- Engaged our telecommunications providers and internal response teams.
- Investigated the source of the activity.
- Implemented mitigation measures to stop the spoofed calls.
- Increased monitoring and continued assessment of the situation.
Our Billing Process
Financial responsibility and potential out-of-pocket costs are typically discussed before admission and throughout treatment. If a patient balance remains after insurance processing, Gateway Foundation generally communicates through mailed statements sent to the address provided at admission.
Steps You Can Take
If you receive an unexpected call claiming to represent Gateway Foundation and requesting payment or personal information:
- Do not provide personal, financial, insurance, or banking information.
- Do not make a payment based solely on an unsolicited phone call.
- End the call if it appears suspicious.
If you shared financial information with a caller, consider:
- Contacting your bank or credit card provider.
- Monitoring your accounts for unauthorized activity.
- Reporting the incident to local law enforcement.
Our Commitment
Gateway Foundation takes the privacy and security of those we serve and our communities seriously. At this time, we believe the spoofed calling activity has stopped. We will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with our telecommunications providers and other partners to address this unauthorized activity and help prevent further misuse of Gateway Foundation phone numbers.
