Sally Thoren first joined Gateway in 1982 as a college intern and became a full-time employee upon graduating. Sally has served in many roles at Gateway during her career: counselor, admissions staff, assistant program director, program director, regional director and now serves as the executive director for Gateway’s services in Chicago. She also manages Gateway’s relationships with many institutional funders.
Over the course of her 35-year career, Sally has seen substance use treatment evolve from a fragmented, hierarchical “behavior modification” approach to a person-centered, trauma-informed, medication-assisted, multidisciplinary approach. She has championed the work in the field, earning the Vince Bakeman Memorial Advocacy award in 2010.
Sally earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Carleton College and also studied law at DePaul University.
Dr. Keith Sarpolis has over 37 years of diverse experience focused on substance use disorder and internal medicine. He approaches healthcare through a holistic perspective, believing that treatment of both the physical and psychosocial aspects of a patient’s health is critical.
Dr. Sarpolis earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School.
The team at Gateway Chicago Independence consists of compassionate clinical experts ready to guide patients through their recovery journey. All staff is trained in Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness-Based Sobriety and Seeking Safety, also known as trauma-informed care, making them qualified to treat the most acute cases of substance use disorders.
