Dr. Karen Fitzhugh joined Gateway in 2017 and has over 30 years of experience working in behavioral health and addiction treatment facilities. Prior to joining Gateway, she operated facilities throughout the United States and internationally with services for children, adolescents, adults and the elderly.
Karen has extensive program design and strategic planning expertise, as well as government relations expertise at the state and national levels. She’s an accomplished public speaker who focuses on issues regarding operation of facilities, mental health and substance use treatment needs, strategic planning and government relations, as well as a wide variety of clinical, operational and leadership topics.
Karen earned her master’s degree and doctorate in educational psychology and special education from the University of California, Riverside. She is also an ordained minister in the congregational church.
Dr. Preet Joshi joined Gateway as the medical director in 2017. Dr. Joshi continues to practice addiction medicine part-time in his private practice as well as treat patients in an urgent care setting.
Dr. Joshi is an active member of the American Association of Family Practice, American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Association. He loves spending his free time with his wife and daughter, cooking and running.
Dr. Joshi grew up in Houston, where he graduated from Houston Baptist University.
The team at Gateway Smyrna is comprised of professional, compassionate members, all with diverse backgrounds and levels of experience. The staff includes psychiatrists, certified alcohol and drug counselors (CADCs) and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs). The counselors are trained in evidence-based practices such as Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness-Based Sobriety and Seeking Safety, also known as trauma-informed care. The clinical team is comprised of staff members from a variety of specialties. The team has weekly staff meetings to develop creative and individualized treatment plans to meet the needs of all patients and address the wellness of the whole person, including addiction, mental health and sober supportive networking.
