Karen Wolownik Albert joined Gateway Foundation in 2010 and has more than 20 years of experience in behavioral health. Prior to joining Gateway Foundation, Karen worked in a variety of outpatient and residential settings.
She is an experienced trainer and has presented at national conferences on a wide array of topics. Karen is on the board of directors of the Lake County Opioid Initiative and is also a co-chair of the Treatment, Recovery and Harm Reduction Committee and a core team member in the development of the A Way Out Program, a law-assisted deflection program in Lake County. In addition, she is a member of the Lake County Underage Drinking and Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force and has served on the board of directors of the Illinois Association for Behavioral Health (IABH) since 2017. She is an adjunct professor at the College of Lake County, and has served on the curriculum committee for the Human Services program since 2011. Karen was the 2018 recipient of Dr. C. Vincent Bakeman Memorial award for her work in the field of addiction treatment.
Karen earned both her bachelor’s in psychology and master’s in social work degrees from the University of Michigan.
Dr. Keith Sarpolis has over 37 years of diverse experience focused on substance use disorder and internal medicine. He approaches healthcare through a holistic perspective, believing that treatment of both the physical and psychosocial aspects of a patient’s health is critical.
Dr. Sarpolis earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School.
The Gateway Foundation Gurnee team is a dynamic and engaging group trained in psychotherapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. With licensed Psychologists, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADCs) and masters-level Counselors, they provide the highest level of substance use disorder treatment and counseling.
