Respect – Dignity – Personalized Care
For over 50 years, Gateway Foundation has successfully served thousands of people struggling with Substance Use Disorders in Illinois— including those identifying as LGBTQ+.
Research shows that the LGBTQ+ community experiences significantly higher rates of addiction — 20-30% of gay and transgender battle substance use. For the general population, it’s 9%.
Gateway Foundation clinicians understand that LGBTQ+ patients often have unique needs, experiences, and specific drivers of addiction, including: self-identification struggles, relationship issues, negative familial discord, compartmentalization, discrimination and stigma, trauma, as well as individualized physical and mental health needs.
To enhance our services for the LGBTQ+ population, Gateway Foundation is launching a specialized 16 bed residential LGBTQ+ unit at our scenic, lakeside, Lake Villa campus.
The Out in Recovery program provides LGBTQ+ patients with Gateway Foundation’s trauma-informed and evidence-based substance use disorder treatment services, all tailored to this population in a supportive milieu. In our Out in Recovery substance use recovery program, patients can explore, find, and be their true self in the comfort of supportive staff and peers.
