HISTORY Gateway Foundation, Inc. is a Chicago-based not-for-profit organization committed to the fight against alcohol and other drug abuse and addiction. Since 1968 we have been an industry leader in providing community-based residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment that is innovative, effective, and cost-efficient. We provide treatment services to help individuals regardless of their ability to pay. In addition to our community-based treatment services, we’ve served as a pioneer in delivering treatment in correctional institutions. We work hand-in-hand with local communities and government agencies to respond to the ever-changing needs of people seeking treatment. We specialize in designing innovative treatment programs to serve the special needs of youth, women and people with mental health diagnoses. We treat more than 27,000 clients per year. Gateway’s committed staff and a dedicated Board of Directors forge treatment partnerships with government agencies, political leaders, law enforcement, and social service organizations. Additional financial support is provided by generous contributions from the civic and business communities and individual donors. The work we’ve done has earned us numerous awards in the industry as well as accreditation from the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). We also strive to educate policy makers and the public about major issues related to substance abuse, addiction, treatment, and to act as advocates in urging adoption of comprehensive treatment programs.
